An Imaginary Day

Sometimes I wish so badly I was somewhere else, somewhere exciting with lots of things going on, lots to see and experience. So I pick a city and scroll through event websites looking at what sort of day I could be having elsewhere. Welcome to my imaginary day out in New York, today it is Saturday next weekend, lets see what we can do.

10 am: The weather is clear with a high of 23 degrees and a low of 14. We will spend the first part of the morning at the Brooklyn Flea. A market specialising in second hand and vintage goods.
It has been labeled as one of the best vintage markets in America and as one of New York's hottest pick-up spots. Watch out Chris! We will wander around the packed stalls, look at the records (only $1 each!) and the furniture, perhaps I will find a dress amongst those that will be perfect for the rest of the day. There is a little chill in the air as it is very much heading into Autumn. We walk so long and far that our feet get tired and our bellies start to get a little hungry, so we get the water taxi over to central New York, it goes past the Brooklyn Bridge and you can see all the touristy stuff.

12pm: We have sushi for lunch at Sushein, it is so delicious and fresh. We sit over lunch for quite a while talking and drinking miso in one of the booths.

2 pm: After lunch we take a bus to Central Park and see more of New York on the way, sitting on the bus we get to listen to lots of people talking and note how different everyone seems from at home and how busy the city is. Once we get to the park we go for a walk to take in the seasonal colour.

3pm: We are pretty close to the Museum of Natural History so we decide to take a look. Right now they have exhibits about the worlds largest dinosaurs, frogs; which is back by popular demand and large format images showing how photography can be used in science.

5pm: It is getting even cooler, we go back to where we are staying and change for dinner, enjoy sitting in the quiet for just a little while before we step out again.

6pm: We have dinner at an intimate little restaurant called August. It offers 'pan-European' cuisine, the chef is extremely well trained and experienced. Some more people we know join us. It is romantic low lighting and we talk about all the things we have seen so far, the amazing purchases we made at the market, the people we saw, the food we ate, how sad we are at the passing of Summer, but what we can look forward to in Winter; the snow, Christmas.

8pm :  It is time to go to a show! We have decided after much debate to go to Mary Poppins. It is spectacular, far better than the movie. And at the end we join in a standing applause and leave with smiles that hurt our cheeks and a spring in our step from watching so much dancing.

10pm: After it has finished we decide to discuss just how amazing it was over cocktails, luckily we made a reservation at Please Don't Tell, because it is a pretty exclusive bar. The entrance is inside a hot dog joint 'Crif Dogs', you turn right just after the entrance where you will find a phone booth; go into the phone booth and press the buzzer, the door will open a crack, you state your reservation and are ushered in. Inside there are taxidermied critters on the walls and intimate booths and groupings of tables. The Cocktail menu is renowned for being great and we all order different drinks and try each others to find the best.

Afterwards we go for a walk around the city to see the night lights, which glow against the light cloud cover making it seem as bright as day. We then each find our own way home.
What a wonderful day out in New York, but tiring, I feel glad to be back home in my own little flat in Christchurch.
